Spondylus is a thorny oyster from the warm Pacific waters off Ecuador and northern Peru, and in ancient Andean societies it was so valued that it was traded over long distances and used in ceremonies. Ilaria, founded in 1992 by Italian-born designer Ilaria Ciabatti, continues this connection to pre-Inca heritage: its more than 100 artisans handcraft every piece in Peru.
